LATAM Airlines understands that proud pet owners cannot travel without their pets. Considering this need of all pet owners, airlines have developed a pet policy that can be helpful for passengers. However, pet owners must follow certain guidelines and rules before booking a flight with their pets.

LATAM Airlines Pet Policy Basics

LATAM Airlines has three types of pet transport: in the cabin with the owner, in the plane's hold, or through LATAM Cargo. But all the travel has some similar guidelines for allowing pets, and those are:

  • The pet owner should have all the compulsory documentation for the origin, connection, and destination. 
  • The carrier or containers used by the owner should withstand the LATAM guidelines. 
  • All the pets should be fit and fine.
  • The pet must be at least 4 months old and stop drinking milk for at least 5 days before they can travel.

Pets in the Cabin

Carrying your pet in the Cabin? You must examine all the rules and regulations for bringing pets into the cabin.  

Pets That Can Travel in a Cabin

  • LATAM allows only cats and dogs with a total weight of 7 kg to travel in the cabin. The owner should bring a proper transport container or carrier for their pets. 
  • LATAM allows flyers to carry service and emotional assistance dogs in the cabin.
  • Only 1 pet per passenger can travel in the cabin.
  • Passengers above 12 years of age can travel with their pets in the cabin.
  • Pets are only allowed in the Economy and Premium Economy Cabins.

Cabin Requirements for Kennel

You must follow the size and weight restrictions for carrying your pet in the Kennel.

  • For specialized travel bags:

The size of the travel bag within 36 cm long X 33 cm wide X 23 cm high, and the weight must be 7 kg / 15 lbs along with the pet.

  • For Travel Kennel:

The size for the travel Kennel must be 36 cm long X 33 cm wide X 19 cm high, and the weight should be 7 kg / 15 lbs along with the pet.

Note: Either be it the travel bag or Kennel the owner must attach two separate bowls. One bowl for food and one bowl for water should be attached for feeding the pet. 

Points to remember For Cabin pets

  • The bag or container should not have any wheels.
  • It should fit under the seat horizontally. 
  • It should be durable material your pet can’t destroy easily.
  • It should be big enough to move inside it without any problem easily.
  • The carrier should have ventilation and should be leakproof.

Guidelines for Service Dogs For LATAM Airlines

You are allowed to travel with your service dogs without any additional cost. However, your dogs must be fit enough; you should carry the documentation to prove their fitness.

Tips for traveling with service dogs to and from the United States 

As per the guidelines of the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), a service dog can only travel in the cabin. The dog must be trained enough to assist their owner in any manner, like in cases of disability. On the other side, the owner must fulfill the below-mentioned criteria. 

  • Fill out the DOT Air Transport form. 
  • Complete the DOT Asstestaion form in a trip of more than 8 hours. 
  • The owner should fill out the form 48 hours prior to the departure of the flight. 

Trips to London 

Flyers with plans to travel to/from London's Heathrow Airport, along with the service dogs, can request entry authorization from the reception center of the airport. Make sure to do it 72 hours prior to the departure of the flight.

Trips to other destinations 

  • In Chile, service dogs are only permitted to board Latam Airlines flight when a trainer handles them and are certified.
  • Services to LATAM Airlines Brasil, service dogs getting the training may board with their owners. 

Documents required for service dogs 

  • Flyers from Chile who plan to fly abroad must have an animal export certificate issued by the agriculture and Livestock.
  • Traveling from Brazil will require showing the dog’s current anti-rabies vaccination documents.
  • Passengers from Colombia will need to show the dog’s vaccination card or certificate. It should also have the professional registration number of the veterinarian. 

Guidelines for Emotional Support Animals 

  • Only flyers traveling to/from Mexico and Colombia and domestic flights within Colombia can carry their Emotional support pets.
  • The booking for carrying emotional pets should be made at least 48 hours prior to the departure of the flight. 
  • The airline allows dogs on routes to/ from Mexico and Colombia for emotional support pets. But cats are only allowed to/from and within Colombia.

LATAM Airlines Pets in the Hold 

  • Dogs and Cats can travel in the hold of the same plane in which their owner is traveling. There are certain weight and size restrictions. Moreover, the pet should be carried in a proper carrier or kennel.
  • 2 pets per passenger can travel in the Hold. 
  • Flyers 12 years or older can travel with pets in the hold. 
  • If your pet exceeds the weight limit of 45kg or 32kg on the flights to/from Argentina and Europe. Moreover, if it's on the list of dangerous breeds, you can transport it with LATAM Cargo.

Prohibited Breeds

The airline has also released a list of certain prohibited breeds that are not allowed to board the flight.

  • Brachycephalic breeds: Affenpinscher, Boston Terrier, Bulldog, Cane Corso or Italian Mastiff, Chow Chow, English Toy Spaniel, Brussels Griffon, 
  • Dangerous breeds: Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, Akita In, Dogo Argentino, Brazilian Fila, Karabash, Rottweiler, Japanese Tosa, Doberman.
  • Brachycephalic and dangerous breeds: American Staffordshire Terrier, English Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Pitbull Terrier, Boxer, Bullmastiff, Dogue Bordeaux,
  • Prohibited cat breeds: The airline won’t allow American Burmese, Himalayan, Exotic Shorthair, and Persian cats.

Pets in the LATAM Cargo

Pets traveling in the LATAM cargo are unaccompanied pets, and these don’t need any owner or guardian to travel with. 

General Limitations for transporting pets 

The service of transporting pets is not available in;

  • Galapagos Archipelago, Australia, New Zealand, England.
  • In code sharing or connecting flights. 
  • The pet service in the hold isn’t available on flights between Santiago and Guayaquil, Lima and Quito, and Guayaquil.
  • The pets in the hold will be only accepted on flights and trips with a maximum of 1 connection for your complete itinerary.

Note: Transporting pets is temporarily restricted to the flight to the United States and Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia.

Preparing pet Prior to the trip 

  • Before the Latam flight make your pet practice Acclimation.
  • Acclimation is the process where you allow your pet to stay in the kennel or carrier before the flight. With this, you will be able to ensure the comfort of your pet.
  • Feed your pet properly. 
  • Try to start practicing this process 3 weeks prior to the trip.
